SCAM ALERT – Beware of Fraudulent Calls Pretending to be Chief McNamara or other
Local and Federal Law Enforcement Officials
#Methuen Friends and Followers, we want to alert you to a concerning scam currently targeting law individuals in our area. Scammers have been making fraudulent phone calls, impersonating Chief Scott McNamara and/or claiming to represent various law enforcement agencies. These criminals employ tactics designed to intimidate and defraud innocent victims. Here are some common elements of the scam:
• Caller Pretending to Be a Federal Agent: Scammers often pose as federal agents, including members of the US Border Patrol, US Marshals, or Customs Department.
• Threats and Intimidation: Victims are told they are involved in illegal activities, such as drug transportation or having active warrants, to create fear and urgency.
• Withdrawal of Funds: Victims are instructed to withdraw large sums of money from their bank accounts, often followed by instructions to deposit the funds into cryptocurrency accounts, like Bitcoin.
• Silence and Secrecy: Scammers emphasize staying quiet and not alerting anyone, such as bank personnel or law enforcement, about their actions.
It’s crucial to remember that Chief Scott McNamara and other legitimate law enforcement officers would never contact individuals in this manner to demand money or make threats.
Protect Yourself:
• Be cautious of unsolicited calls and never share personal or financial information with unknown callers.
• Verify the identity of the caller by independently contacting your local law enforcement or government agency using official contact information.
• If you receive such a call, remain calm, hang up, and report it to your local police immediately.
• Educate friends and family about this scam to prevent others from becoming victims.
We are working diligently to investigate and address these fraudulent activities. Please stay vigilant and report any suspicious calls to your local law enforcement agency. Your safety and security are our top priorities. Together, we can prevent these scams from affecting our community.
