On Sunday, October 29, 2023, Methuen Police Department’s very own, Lieutenant James Gunter laced up his running sneakers, and tied them a little tighter, as he mentally prepared for the 26th Annual Lawrence Vietnam Memorial Road Race. Lt. Gunter, a 25 year veteran of the Methuen Police Department is also a Veteran of the United States Army and served active duty from 1988-1995. During this time, he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, Okinawa, Japan, and Fort Devens, Massachusetts. With intentions of spending a career in the Army, the birth of his first child changed his mind. It was at this time, that Lt. Gunter decided that he would fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a police officer. Twenty-five years later, Lt. Gunter serves within the ranks of Methuen PD as a positive, inspirational, and well respected officer.
This years’ 26th Annual Lawrence Vietnam Memorial Road Race was the second year in a row that Lt. Gunter dedicated himself to run in, and we congratulate him on his dedication and accomplishment. Post the race, and at the closing ceremonies, Lt. Gunter was awarded the Veteran Award for the top time for Veteran runners in his age group. Lieutenant, congratulations on your accomplishment and prestigious award! When asked why he runs the race, Lt. Gunter responded, “I have been working hard on myself mentally and physically over the last 3 few years, and I wanted to push myself. We can all do it, and I hope to inspire fellow Veterans and Officers to run in next year’s race.”
Lt. Gunter proudly dedicated this race to his Father-In-Law, Dennis Bergeron, who is a Navy Vietnam Veteran.
