Just in from Mayor Jajuga’s Office!
Mayor Jajuga is monitoring the response to the storm yesterday; he is working with all City departments to ensure that we are doing what we can to assist residents during this difficult time, particularly those who are without power.
At present, it appears that there are still about 7,000 residents (over 15% of the city) without power due to over 40 different outages, including the Mayor and his family. Our Department of Public Works is working to clear over 250 downed trees, some of which have brought down power lines which may be active, creating a significant safety concern that requires a cautious approach to clearing them. National Grid has not provided us with any certainty about when power can be restored.
To assist Methuen residents who need a warm place this afternoon, Mayor Jajuga has extended the hours at the Methuen Senior Activity Center (77 Lowell Street), which usually closes at 12:30pm on Fridays, to 4:00pm. In addition, the Nevins Memorial Library (305 Broadway) will extend its closing today to 6:00pm (and will be open 9:00am to 5:00 pm on Saturday.)
Please continue to call 9-1-1 for public safety emergencies. Also, please be sure to use proper safety precautions with space heaters and generators to ensure that no one in your home is injured.
